  1. There was a hedge school in Keale about sixty years ago. Hedge schools were the local name for them. The hedge school was a thatched house. John Mullane was the name of one of the teachers. The schools used be carried on in the farmers houses. The teachers used stay in the farmers houses. The subject they taught were English Reading Spelling and Arithmetic. Irish was spoken by the master and the pupils. Irish was taught also. The books that were used were English books and Irish books.

  2. There was a hedge school in our district near the present school. The subjects they taught in them were Irish English Geography and Airthmetic. They used to teach indoors and in the open. The teachers that taught in the schools were Master O Riordan and Master Sheehan. They belonged to the Parish. The school was carried on sometimes in the farmers houses. The Master used to go home with the children in the evening.
