  1. The Batesons of Belfast were the Landlords around here, and their agent was Mr. Power. He was a very good man, and often when the poor people were not able to pay the rates Mr. Power used to pay them out of his own pocket.
    There is a story told of a poor woman who lived down in Loughill, and she was not able to pay the rent, ant at Christmas, Mr. Power sent her five pounds. The woman was a poor widow.
    The Batesons never evicted their tenents, but they were dear Landlords. Tenants were evicted in Shanegolden and in Glensharrold, but not in the Bateson property. When a Landlord quarrelled with a tenant he raised the rent on him, but after awhile he reduces it again.
    Mr. Power lived in Clanshee near Adare. He was a very popular man. Sometimes when men from this locality took over their rent to Mr. Power's house in Adare they always got a kindly welcome from the agent. And they always got their dinner at his
