- In the time of the Black-and-Tans there were no public-houses in Foynes, only one small public-house in Shanagolden. One day a ship of English Officers came into foynes pier and there some black people on the ship also.
They went up to the public-house in Shanagolden for a drink, and when they were coming home they were very drunk. They had a fight up Corgrig road, and a few black men were killed. The English officers buried them along the side of the road, and that is why Corgrig road was called the Black road.
