  1. Long ago in olden times there was a fort near Corgrigg Castle where the fairies lived. At the opposite side of the road, there was a small little house where an old man and woman lived.
    Every night when the old pair were going to bed they had to leave bread and butter on the table for the fairies. One night the old woman forgot to get the table. The fairies came and broke all befoe them until the old woman got up and set the table for them so ever afterwards she set the table for them.
