  1. The Potato - Crop.

    Both farmers and labourers grow a considerable amount of potatoes every year.
    My father is a farmer and grows about an acre of this crop.
    Before the potatoes are sown the garden is prepared by first ploughing it, and it is then harrowed and rolled until it is level enough to open the drills. If the garden is small, ridges are made with a spade by turning the sods of earth up side down and making the ridge about twice the width of a drill.
    Wooden ploughs were used formerly, but it is iron ploughs that are used recently, and they are not made locally but are bought in shops.
