- Ancient Customs.Archaeological. The following customs were carried out in this district up to some time ago.59
(a), The same four men who take the coffin from the house to the hearse must also take the coffin round the Churchyard and if possible they must have the same surname as the dead person, or be nearly connected.(b). Some corpses used be laid out on kitchen tables, and the relatives of the opposite side of the family, that is the friends of the husband's in opposition to the wife's friends, used watch the table or bed very closely, biding the time the corpse would be put into the coffin. Then whatever side succeeded in turning over the table or tick the first was considered to have turned the disease, or the death (the person died of), on to the other side of the family. This often led to quarreling and division.(continues on next page)
