  1. Long ago there lived in Blane, a townsland some miles south of Glin a man named John Fuery.
    He was an all-round athlete but he was an expert at running and jumping.
    Once there was a competition between him and a soldier named O'Neill. They ran round a field for about five miles. The soldier was first in the beginning but the other had more endurance and in the last mile shot past his opponent. The soldier dropped dead.
