- Long ago there lived in Blane, a townsland some miles south of Glin a man named John Fuery.He was an all-round athlete but he was an expert at running and jumping.Once there was a competition between him and a soldier named O'Neill. They ran round a field for about five miles. The soldier was first in the beginning but the other had more endurance and in the last mile shot past his opponent.
