  1. Long ago the people of Carrigaline manufactured candles at home.
    This industry was carried on by boiling the fat of a pig, which is called lard. A large pot was placed on a fire and the lard was boiled. When boiled the pot was taken off, and a stick was got, at the end of which were tied a few cotton threads. These threads were stirred about the lard, the person holding the stick; and according as the lard got cool it tied to the threads. After some time a candle was made.
