    Signs of Good Weather

  2. The thatcher must be a man of skill and craft. He first prepares the reed, which is composed of wheaten straw, as grown by the farmer. Next he provides the "scollops" which include briars, twigs, furze and sally.
    These must be cut for several months before use. They are cut to 16 inches in length, cleaned and pointed at both ends. A "stretcher" is then made from the briars etc. The thatcher is now ready to commence.
    A thatching comb, knife, bow, hand-glove and needle complete the man's outfit.
