  1. The following is a poem he wrote on seeing the cenotaph erected to the memory of Captain Roberts (the man who commanded the steamship "Sirius" on her first voyage to America) who was drowned when the steamship "President" sank.
    I gazed upon the monumental stone
    A sad memorial by affection raised
    An humble tribute justly due to one
    By all who knew him loved, revered and praised.
    And as I gazed and thought how deep - how well
