  1. At the time of the Fenians a ship hove to, at Passage West. A rumour spread that this ship carried 2,000 guns. Officials from Cork came to inspect the ship. When they came they found that the ship only contained toy guns. The Fenians raided the ship not knowing it carried only toy guns. A band of Fenians boarded the ship, but when they did, they saw that a squad of R.I.C. were waiting on the quay. Just then another band of Fenians came on to the quay. The R.I.C. did not know which band to attack. While they were debating, the Fenians on the ship rushed over the gangway and escaped. Because of this Head-Constable Dunn of the R.I.C. was reduced to the ranks.
