  1. Most marriages take place locally during Shrove and especially on Shrove Tuesday. May, October, and December are the unlucky months for marriage. May and October are the months of Mary so people like to remain virgins as she was a virgin. A poem says:
    Marry in May
    And you'll rue the day
    The unlucky days for marriage are Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
    Shrove Tuesday Night is known as Sceilg Night. On that night young men disguise themselves and go around to the houses of the old maids and bachelors. They took them out and carried them about three miles from the house. Next day they said that they were taken to Sceilg.
    Matchmaking is very common locally. Money is usually given as
