  1. Long ago the old people used many herbs to cure sickness. Rib. leaf a common plant which grows in ditches was used for cuts, and a common cough was cured by the juice from a mixture of sugar, onions, and a raw turnip grated. The old people believed that where children had whooping cough if one asked a man riding a white horse what he would say would cure it.
