    The magpie is a rather nice looking black and white bird about the same size as a jackdaw. Like the hawk they are flesh eaters and often swoop down and carry off young chickens. Some people look on magpies as omens and the following is believed regarding them -

  2. The following birds are very common in this district (Grange, Fermoy Co Cork) - the robin, the wren, the sparrow and the tit-lark.
    The robin builds her nest in hedges and it is composed of hay, moss and clay. In frosty weather
