  1. Bread was made from wheat grown locally and which was ground with quern-stones. Potato cake was made of potatoes and flour. Oaten-meal bread was made of oaten-meal and flour. Stampy bread used to be made of potatoes and flour. Milk was used sometimes. Enough bread for a week was baked at one time. People put a cross on the cake to keep the crust from rising.
