  1. On the lands of Mr. Michael Downey, Kilclooney Kildorrery Co. Cork lie the ruins of a small house. In this house there was an old school. The teachers who taught there were named Hegarty and Dempsey. Irish and English were taught. The house was later occupied by David Slattery who was able to read and write both languages.
At one time there was a hedge school near the residence of Mr. Thomas Mc Carthy, Ballysurdane Kildorrery Co. Cork. The teacher who was named Walsh was kept in the farmers' houses of the district. Irish and English were taught, catechism being taught in Irish. In bad weather the instruction was given in the farmers' houses in turn. Each pupil paid a fee of a penny per week.
