  1. There was once a gentleman and his lady living in a lovely residence near Buttevant Co. Cork. There were three lodges going into the gentlemans house and there was always a man at each gate. Now the gentleman happened to go to England on business and while he was away his wife was'nt to entertain any visitors and no one was to see her only the servants. When the gentleman went to England he started playing cards with an Englishman. At about ten o clock the Englishman said he should go home because his wife would be wandering what was keeping him. The Irishman said that he would give his wife no trouble where he would be because she knew that he was able to take care of himself and besides she had no one to bother her because she was to entertain no visitors until he would come back. No one was to see her only the servants. "I bet you a hundred pounds that if I go to Ireland I will see her" says the Englishman. "Alright" says the Irishman. "I bet you a hundred pounds you will not." So the Englishman started out for Ireland to see the lady. The Irishman was to stay in England until the Englishman would return and describe all about his wife. The English-
