    Long before the dawn of organised athletics, the fame of semi-legendary local athletes had penetrated far beyond the confines of Butttevant parish. In the absence of written proof of their prowess, it is impossible to compare accurately their feats with the carefully registered outstanding performances of their successors, but one clings to belief of the veracity of romantic accounts which have come down to us, with a wealth of picturesque detail of phenomenal leaps from river-bank to river-bank, and mighty flings of weight-throwers across ravines or over lofty castle walls that dwarf anything to be found in modern second-books; for making due allowance for old time exaggeration, it can be safely assured that our physically strong, active and courageous ancestors, who gloried in manliness and necessarily
