  1. FESTIVAL CUSTOMS ON ST. STEPHEN’S DAY
    St Stephen’s Day was once a great day in the district. It was a great custom to go “hunting the wren” on St. Stephen’s Day. Long ago a crowd of boys used to gather together and hunt the wren and whoever caught her used to tie her on top of a holly bush. The latter used to be ornamented with coloured ribbons.
    They used to march from house to house collecting money and playing music and singing the following lines.
    “The wren, the wren, the king of all birds
    St Stephen’s Day he was caught in the furze.
    Although he was little, his family was great
