- It stands near the village and was once the seat of the Earls of Desmond. It was a fine Anglo-Norman building said to have been erected soon after the coming of Strongbow, by the De Cogans from whom the Desmonds had the Estates.
The Castle was partially destroyed by Cromwell. The building was of square form with a circular tower at each of the four angles, two of which are in a fair state of preservation. Some years after the castle was destroyed, a good mansion was built quite near and was subsequently occupied at one time or another by the Bowers, the Bowens and the Barrys.
Milford village is quite near the castle. About seventy years ago the village was much larger. To the recollection of some people still living in Milford, there were at one time fourteen shoemakers, six coopers , four tailors, four carpenters, three blacksmiths and two weavers with looms for linen, flannel, etc. working in the village. The river Deel is flowing through the village and is spanned by a substantial(continues on next page)
