  1. About 40n yeras ago Newtown Shandrum and Meelin played a hurling match in Monagaa - Limerick.
Newtown won and a song was composed about it.
"The 3rd of November to Meelin we did go ,
To goal the sturdy Meelin men
    They really were a show
on white and green they could be seen
    So bodly marching down
To goal the few but hardy lads
    That came from sweet Newtown
    Lucky Meelin won the toss
And played both hill & wind
They were but scarce 10 minutes goaling
When they had scored a point.
The leader was sent flying again And a splendid play was seen
You'd love to see a Shandrum boy
    Upset a white and green".
