  1. LOCAL LANDLORDS
    The local landlords were Mr. Coote, Mr. Wrixon and Mr. Leader. The first named was very bad; the second was not so severe. Evictions took place in many places. The eviction in this district that had the most serious consequences was that of James Binchy, Glounicommane. Binchy was evicted in 1899 and the land was given by the landlord to a neighbouring farmer.
    The people of the district backed Binchy in every way and a stern fight went on for many years. Shopkeepers refused to supply the grabber with the necessaries of life. This grabber was under police protection for three or four years when a settlement was effected. The grabber paid over to Binchy a stipulated sum of money and Binchy was given another farm instead,
