  1. PENAL DAYS
    In the Penal Days, in a part of Kiltane called Ard Na Croise, there were about forty houses. There was a man coming round in that district as a pedlar but he was suspected as a spy. The people of Ard na Croise had a grapham commonly known as a grub between them. One night the pedlar was killed, the grapham being the weapon that was used. The last that had the grapham was suspected of the murder. He fled for America and when on board a ship in mid ocean a storm arose. The captain and crew of the ship were terrified as they never experienced anything the like before. And believing it due to no natural cause, he came to the conclusion that there was a murderer on board. The captain questioned the passenger and the murderer admitted his guilt. He was put out in a small boat and picked up by a ship next day and returned to
