On the evening of the curse, seven hounds disappeared mysteriously and were never seen or heard until the death of the first of the family. On the night of the wake the hounds were heard coming howling through the air and descended through the chimney. They sat on their haunches and, their howling continued until the corpse was removed for burial. On another occasion on the death of Betty Clarke a Protestant the wife of the eldest of the O'Keeffes' a black dog came in and, as was the custom in those days the person was "waked" on the kitchen table. The dog squatted under the table and the people of the house tried to remove the beast but all in vain. The dog refused to go until the person was coffined.
