  1. There are very few of real old houses left in this district.
    These old houses were mud walled roofed with spars of bog oak The bog oak spars were covered with scraws from the bogs or mountains The whole lot was thatched with read or rushes The walling was very thick about three feet generally The windows were very small and few. They were about the size of a double leaf of an exercise copy book There was one small chimney usually in the centre of the house. The kitchen fireplace was a very big mouthed affair getting narrow as it went up The arch of the kitchen chimney was supported on a thick stick about eleven inches in diameter. The kitchen fire place took up almost the full width of the house where the fire was laid was usually paved and at the back was a thick flag to prevent the fire from burning through the wall In the fire place there was also a crane used to hang pots from over the fire The crane hung from one of the chimney piers in the same way as a gate hangs and could be swung out or in front or over the fire as required If you were swinging the crane back and forth without need you were supposed to be washing the devils shirt There were vacant spaces at either side of the fire These were
