- (continued from previous page)song connected with my townland. Dromscarra is in the parish of Boherbue. Kiskeam is the nearest village to Dromscarra. It is to Kiskeam the people of my townland go to mass.
- The potato is grown on our farm. There is about an acre of land under it every year. The manure is spread before the ground is ploughed. Most of the potatoes are grown in ridges and some in drills. Ploughs are usually used but some small farmers use spades. Wooden ploughs were never used in my district. Spades are not made locally but are bought in the shop. Most of the farmers help each other in sowing the crops. They borrow horses and tackling from each other. The potato gets treatment during the Summer. The earth is put around the plant twice, this is called trenching. When the potatoes are dug they are stored in pits. The Champions Arran Banners, and the Irish Queen are the commonest kinds around my district. The pits are made by digging a long shallow hole in the ground. The potatoes are put into this and then covered with rushes and earth. When the stalks are big they are sprayed three times to prevent the blight. Long ago potatoes were used instead of starch by grating them and whatever(continues on next page)
