- Buying and Selling
Shops were not common in olden times. People had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling were carried on after mass on Sundays. This is still practiced. Bread sugar and tea were [?] sold in this way. Money was always given for good. Labour was sometimes given in exchange for goods. Goods were never bartered in the district. Boot and tick were words connected with buying and selling. It was not considered unlucky or totally prohibited to transact business on certain days. The markets were held in towns in former times. They are still held there. People go around buying feathers in this district. They still come. The various coins are are a half-penny a penny a threepenny bit, sixpence, a shilling, ten shilling note , two shilling piece a(continues on next page)
