- William Murphy of Liscarrol threw a hammer, twelve lbs, weight over Liscarroll castle wall a distance of 100 feet. Several prominent weight throwers have tried it since but failed to do so.
There are local swift runners around, the Guinnee brothers of Kanturk are the best athletes in Cork county at present. They are also great jumpers and able to jump six feet and a half. William Kelleher of John's Bridge walked from his home to Macroom and back again, from eight o'clock in the morning until six in the evening. Another man of my district named John Brosnan, walked to Cork, a distance of thirty miles, and home again on the same day. Benjamin Ryan jumped a colum pit in Dromagh, beating all opponents. He was afterwards titled the (Leaper Ryan).
