My grandfather was a cooper and he made firkins. The first thing he did was to go to Cork for timber. This timber was oak. When he brought it home he cut it to the size of firkin and made staves of the timber. He then put the timber into tresshoops with fire around it to soften it.When it was shaped like a firkin he put timber hoops bound with twigs to keep the firkins from falling asunder.
