Long ago a feather monger lived in Newmarket. His name was Jim Scanlan. He went around buying feathers and sometimes he plucked the fowl. He gave two pence halfpenny per pound for the feathers and he used to bring them home in a linen bag on his back. It is said that all the jennets were afraid of him. When he died his son took up his job and he went around buying the feathers as his father did and when his son died no one else took up the job.
