    Around this Isle in solitude
    I travelled on last eve,
    When Sol was sinking in the west;
    Some cause had I to grieve,
    While in the east bright Luna rose,
    Among the glittering stars,
    And cast her beams around my path,
    The wild waves washed the walls.

    I looked around and then beheld,
    On every side the sea;
    Thought I, how hard it is, indeed,
    Cast on this Isle, to be
    Far from all friends and parents dear,
    As well as from a home,
    Exposed to hardships unrevealed,
    And dangers dire to come.

    While musing thus I soon came up
    To stones beside the waves,
    And knew by marks upon them cut,
