Taken down by William Twohig (12), Bawnmore.
A number of years ago there lived at Mountmassy a great tyrant named William Massy, where Con Kelleher is living now. He owned all Carriganima, Moulnahorna, and Cashloura. He would not allow anyone to hunt on his estate. Anyone who dared to hunt on it would be heavily fined. He thought no one could defy him. He put a challenge in the paper that he would give £50 to anyone who would hunt his estate, little thinking that anyone would do it. The Duhallow club saw the challenge and sent a notice that they would meet him at Cashloura Cross on a certain Sunday. On the appointed day the Duhallow club came, and brought a priest with them. When the Mountmassy soldiers came it was thought that the priest did something to them, because they never fired a shot; they turned and went down again. The Duhallow club hunted all the estate and when they came to Mount Massy they went to the halldoor and claimed their reward. That broke Massy's heart, and he never went out afterwards.
