There was a hedge school in Riverstick, and the teacher's name was Master Whelton. The subjects taught in the hedge schools were Irish, writing, arithmetic principally the Irish language. Sometimes of a wet winter's day, the teacher used to go around to the houses and teach the scholars at their homes.
