  2. Among other changes made in the Protestant Church in the year 1835 was the erection of a cross on the east gable. But immediately after the Vestry, yielding to the protests of bigots among the parishioners, decided to remove the Popish emblem. For a time they were faced with a difficulty. No mason in the town could be induced to dishonour the sign of redemption. At last the job was undertaken by a tramp from the west (Driscoll was his name I think). After loosing the packing around the pedestal he workman tugged at the Cross. It yielded to the pull more freely than he expected so that he was jerked backwards lost his balance fell off the scaffold and broke his neck.
    After this tragic occurrence it was decided to restore the Cross.
