  1. Old Trades
    The old people had many clever trades in making things.
    Candles were made from tallow and tallow was got from the fat of the cow. First the tallow was melted down and put into candles.
    Soap was also made from the fat of the cow.
    Bleaching powder was made from furze blossoms burned down to white ashes then clothes were boiled with it.
    Dye was made from furze blossoms and if they liked any colour besides yellow they mixed coloured paper with it. Shoes were made from the hide of the cow. Polish was made from soot. They used to boil nettles with the meat for their dinner.
