    In olden times it was the custom of people to travel very long distances to market to sell their goods.
    For instance people from Ardfield often walked to Dunmanway or Bandon with their baskets of butter and eggs, and often carried these baskets on their head for a part of the way and sometimes they had donkey and Carts to take these.
    People often gave the night travelling to be in time for the next days market. It was also usual to take the oats and barley to Bandon to sell. In later times each town had its own
