Some years ago there were a great many men and women travelling around the country from house to house. There was one woman who used to come about four times a year and she used not to go to any house only where she used to get sixpence or something good. She would not tell her name; she would say when asked, that is not to be told. There was a small little man named Michael Barry who used to go around selling laces and hairpins and needles and he would be very thankful for a night's lodging. There was another man and he used to wear a high straw hat and carry bags of old clothes around in his back. It was said that he was summoned for begging and when searched that he had three hundred pounds. He was called Jack the monk.
