It was an old custom round Butlerstown on St. Patrick's morning to take a bit of burnt stick out of the fire and with the black charred end make three crosses on each child's arm.

It was an old custom round Butlerstown on St Patrick's morning to take a bit of burnt stick out of the fire and with the black charred end make three crosses on each child's arm. Timothy Holland saw his grandmother do it and did it himself also. He says it had some connection with the faith brought to Ireland by St. Patrick. His grandmother lived in Butlerstown.
