    It was a common belief that people who suffered from loong and lingering illness were spirited away and some useless 'iarlais' put in their place. When they were carried off their only hope of release was to refuse to accept or partake of any of hte food offered them by the fairies. In this manner the fairies failed to get power over them and there was hope of their release sooner or later.
