there can be no doubt it is a plural of Clann, a family and the whole word signifies the settlement of the Clans or families of Caoilte. Who or what was Caoilte? Some suggest it means woods and if the place was thickly wooded in old times the derivation would not be unlikelY. I think however that Caoilte was simply a man's name afterwards anglicised kilty. The name Caoilte was not unknown in ancient Ireland as the famous Caoilte Mac Rowan of Fenian literature can attest.
I have heard another explanation that the word Caoilte may be derived from Cormac na Coille (McCarthy) who had territory in this locality but in this word Coille the letter i is short while in the place name it is distinctly long.
