- Near the road from Clonakilty to Ring, stands the scanty remnant of a castle (at one time mistaken for a ruined parish church). It was the stronghold of the Anglo-Norman Arundel, called Lord Arundel of the Strand. Spenser in his "View of the State of Ireland," observes that Lord Arundel, who anciently a great lord and had an estate of £3,500 a year, was, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, a tenant to Lord Barry to whom he performed the services that were due only to the Queen.
