  1. The sun went down on the hazel dell
    When the deadly fight was o'er,
    Some thousands lay on the battle field
    Their lives to claim no more,
    The moon shone pale on the damp, cold, ground,
    Where a dying soldier lay,
    The breath of death around him crept,
    As his life blood flowed away,
    A passing comrade heard his moans
    And soon the sufferer found,
    As he gently raised his aching head off the damp, cold, ground,
    Come gently, softly, comrade,
    No more on this earth I'll stray
    I never will roam the hills at home
    In Ireland far away.

    A lock of my hair I crave you bear
    To my mother that's o'er the sea,
    And every time she will look at it
    She will surely think of me,
    Tell her at home no more I'll roam,
    Where in childhood I loved to stray,
