    As I went out walking one morning in Spring,
    For to hear the birds whistle and the night-ingales sing,
    I spied a young damsel and the song she did sing.
    I'm going to be married next Monday morning.

    I stepped up beside her and to her I did say;
    "How old are you now my pretty fair maid;"
    "In here in those valleys, those valleys so green
    I'll be fifteen years old next Monday morning.

    "Fifteen years old is too young for to marry,
    Take five years more for to tarry,
    For marriage brings trouble and sorrows begin;
    So put off your marriage next Monday morning."
