  1. Along Drumcondra road I strayed,
    The smoky town was just in sight.
    I met a woman stooped and old,
    And she was in a ragged plight,
    "Oh! Master dear! for sake of Heaven
    In pity look on me;
    You'll never miss a penny, given away in charity.
    That I'm in want the world may see;
    That I am old I'm sure appears;
    At Xmas next my age will be
    just eight and sixty years;"
    "Any how did all those years go by;
    Pray tell me what have you been at?"
    "Oh! Sir t'would take an hour or more
    For me to tell all that:
    When I was small, and very small, to service I was sent:
    And by my mother I was told, not to be sulky, stiff or bold;
    But to whatever place I went, still to be ready at a call;
    And act obligingly to all.
