  1. Long ago the people had a different way of making butter from what they have now. They had a small churn, wide at the bottom and narrowing at the top. There was a cover in the top, and a hole in the middle of it. There was a stick inside in the hole, and when the cream was put in, they turned the stick around and that would beat the cream, and in that way make their butter. The old people had charms also. Some people say that they would carry the butter from their neighbours. In May morning if they wanted to take butter from anyone, they went out and milked their cows. They also had special prayers to say on that occasion. They had pisógs also, and they wouldn't give anything to another belonging to their cows. Once my grandfather went to a man in Larne called Denis Mahony for a bundle of plants, he forgot to carry a rope, so Denis Mahony gave him one and is was the spancel he had for tying the cows.
