  1. There is a fort in the townland of Shountellig which is in the farm of William Lewis and about four hundred yards from my house. It is known by the name of fort and the field in which it is, is called the field of the fort. It is circular in shape but there is no fence around it. There is on entrance hole leading into it with a little door and steps leading to the interior. These forts are said to have been built by the Danes and there were always three of them within sight of each other so that the danger signal could be given to the three at the one time. This fort is complete as the owners of the land did not interfere with it as they did not count it lucky to do so. They do not plough this field but cattle graze on it. This fort it is said has been explored by many. My father told me that himself and two other men explored it one night with a halfpenny candle. They had to crawl for a long way
