  1. Long ago the people used to say that it was unlucky to go to see the sick on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and the old custom is still kept. They wouldn't get married on those days, or remove into a new house.
They would not get married in Lent or in the month of May, or in Advent.
The lucky days are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The old people also say that there was a great cure in the May morning dew. Before sunrise the boys and girls used to go our looking for snails and the first snail they would meet they take it home and put into a plate of flour and the snail would write the name of the person its finder would be married to; and the colour of the snail would be the colour of his or her love's hair. They would also rise early and bring in the green branches of trees for the summer. They used to be running to see who would be to the well the first for water. They used not light any fire until late in the day or throw out any ashes.
