My father told me he heard the old people saying that some of the pupils usedn't take him to their houses at all. One day one of those pupils asked Master Carey the meaning of a hard word in the reading lesson. "Pass on child" said Master Carey "the word is Latin".
The children paid money to the master for their learning in schools numbered 3 and 4 in the map. Infant class children paid a few pennies a month. Higher classes paid more.
