  1. A local poet who lived fifty or more years ago was Batt the Fiddler, an old lame man who was born in Gloundala, Dunmanway and used travel west as far as Muintre Baire on donkey back. He was neither learned nor educated, but he had a genious for poety. The priest did not approve of Batt and the following is an extract from a satire on Father Carney
    "And like wise Father Carney
    I don't want to praise your failte
    For I played in Muintre Baire
    Before you knew your creed
    Another poet is Charles Dennis who could make a poem in stones. The following is in praise of Mr Mac Manaway, the ?? while local rector
    Oh Durrus! you were often fluced
    In the good old days gone by
    But only for Mr Mc Manaway
    You should be down and die
    He's out to help industry,
    Give every man fair play
    His enterprising capitalist
    Will surely win the day.
    He can use a pick and shovel
    As any man desired,
