- The following are the dimensions of our churn. It height, three feet, its breadth, about twenty three inches at the bottom and twenty seven inches at the top.
The churn we have at present is about four years old. The various parts are called, the lid, the dash, the rattle which keeps the milk from coming out on the lid. We usually churn about three times a week in the Winter, and four times a week in the Summer.
My mother and sometimes my sisters does the churning. If a stranger comes in during the churning it is a custom that he takes a turn at the churn otherwise the old people tell us that if he goes out without doing so he brings the butter with him. In Summer the churning takes about a half an hour and in Winter about an hour. Our churning is done by the hand. The dash is moved upwards and downwards and while doing so the milk is in a rolling motion and so brings the(continues on next page)
